Spotted Mountain Horse Association News

by Val Kleinheitz

The year 2010 was a huge step forward for the Spotted Mountain Horse Association in both our breeding and showing programs. We started by opening the last seasons Championship classes to both KMSHA and SMHA at the National shows. We then took an even bigger step by opening all classes to Spotted Mountain Horses at our 2010 International Grand Championship. Combining the classes was a move that thrilled some and puzzled others, while many people just did not understand why it was done. At the beginning of last season, our hope was that by opening classes to the Spotted Mountain Horses, we would encourage more people to come out and show with KMSHA/SMHA.

For many years the Spotted Mountain Horse Association offered a handful of classes with the hope of these classes attracting larger entries and encouraging Spotted Mountain Horse breeders to breed for the Mountain Horse conformation and gait. These classes were slow to fill.

The SMHA Championship classes were separated out at the 2010 International Grand Championship Show in order to showcase the accomplishments of the Spotted Mountain Horse as its own breed and to keep a record of the Spotted Mountain Horse Association progress from year to year.

The Spotted Mountain Horse is first and foremost a Mountain Horse. Our Spotted Mountain Horses have a lot more color and pattern and a shorter registry history, but our horses are still Mountain Horses.

As owners and breeders we need to breed for Mountain Horse conformation, temperament and gait. SMHA is a different registry and it is great that The time is here for our Spotted Mountain Horses to be crossed with solid Mountain Horses and produce foals that are closer to the Mountain Horse standards.

SMHA registry books are open in order to add depth to the Spotted Mountain Horse gene pool, not to change the traits of the Mountain horse. Next year will be the 10th Anniversary of the Spotted Mountain Horse Association. SMHA has accomplished much in the short time it has been in existence. You will see us on the rail, on the trail, at competitive trail rides and endurance competition against some of the best gaited and non gaited horses in the country. Progress can not stop now. Our Spotted Mountain Horses have much to contribute to the Mountain Horse world.
