The
second KMSHA Competitive Trail Ride was held on November 3 at John
Haddix’s 800-acre Summer Shade Farm in Winchester, Kentucky, and
drew 18 competitors and their mounts from throughout Kentucky and
other states
Tracy Burchell, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and
her versatile KMSHA mare Blue Moon’s Southern Belle, once again took
top honors as the winner of the competitive ride and the coveted
$1,000 first place payback. Burchell, a member of the KMSHA advisory
board, also won the inaugural KMSHA Competitive Trail Ride held on
July 21.
"The competitive trail riding program emphasizes
good horsemanship skills, trail etiquette, and the partnership
between horse and rider," said Haddix. "It is an exciting
opportunity for riders of all ages to compete in a friendly
environment while putting their camping and trail skills to the
test."
The two competitive trail rides held this year
were a first for the new and growing KMSHA program that has generous
paybacks through tenth place. Horses and riders navigate a series of
natural obstacles, while putting their horsemanship skills to work
in order to achieve a winning score.
